While we think it’s super important to set a vision for your marriage as a whole (like the vision that you have for your marriage as it pertains to your lifetime) — that is not exactly what we’re talking about today. Today we’re talking about something a bit smaller and more digestible but definitely still powerful!
Setting a Yearly Vision for Your Marriage
For January’s marriage newsletter that we sent out earlier this month, we shared with our readers how important we think this concept is and why we do it. Today, we’re sharing HOW to do it by giving the specific example of what our own marriage goal is for this year.
First
We asked ourselves: “Where is the place we want to see the most growth in our marriage this year?”
And our answer was: Pursuing God together as husband and wife. This is aside from our personal walks with Jesus and aside from simply praying together a couple of times a week. We desire to growth in our faith together.
I will make a side note that another area we want to grow in is to have more fun together/laugh more together/be more spontaneous together (can you tell we are a husband-and-wife business team!??! HA!) but where we desire to see the MOST growth is where I just mentioned above and it would be disingenuous to not share that with you! Your vision/goal could be related to anything — managing money, communication, or just like one of ours, having more fun together! : )
Second
So after answering the question, we then created three tangible steps we could take, by the end of the month, to help us grow towards our vision. We wrote them down (with dates!!!!) as follows:
- Find a devotional that we can do together (by 1/29)
- Order the devotional (by 1/30)
- Set up a time to discuss the devotional once/week (on the day we receive the devotional)
After seeing the steps we listed above, you can easily gather that doing a devotional together is just ONE of the many ways we can work towards our 2018 vision of pursuing God together as husband and wife. We chose to start this way because these steps are something we can easily do in a single month! We’ve found that taking tangible steps that are both CLEAR and REALISTIC promote progress better than lofty goals that end up seeming too hard to reach and ultimately lead to nothing happening (sharing this from experience!). As you choose to set a couple keys steps (that can totally be accomplished!) every month, you will quickly start making tons of progress towards your ultimate vision!
There is no shame in not completing the tasks that you have set for the month — just reevaluate them if necessary (were they too big or too vague?) and simply readjust! Don’t give up completely on your goal just because of a bad month!
Here’s to growth in 2018!
