Traveling Charleston | Personal Post | Trip Recap + The Best Places to Eat!

March 16, 2016

I’m in LOVE with Charleston. I’m convinced that it doesn’t really get any better than that charming little city nestled beside the ocean. From the cobblestone streets + old historic homes (with huge front porches!) to the ocean breeze, unbeatable food, + bustling sidewalks, I told Caleb that we need to move!! … someday : )

Since we were only in the city for about two + a half days, I can’t give much travel advice or tips for time in the city. We definitely plan to go back someday when we aren’t there for a conference — just for vacation so we can REALLY enjoy + explore the city in all of it’s glory! : ) Although we were busy with speakers + meetings during the majority of our two-day stay, we did have time to wander a bit for lunch + dinner each day, so I CAN recommend some incredible restaurants to try if you are traveling Charleston in the near future!

1. Fleet Landing

Known for it’s seafood — specifically Charleston’s famous shrimp + grits! — Fleet Landing is right on the water + has a very nautical, cozy vibe. ALL six of us LOVED our meals + apparently the hushpuppy appetizers were amazing (but since I don’t like seafood, I can’t vouch for that ; )!). I was happy as a clam with my deep fried ‘fish n’ chips’ — extra tartar, please!

2. Merino

This stop might have been my personal favorite. A Mexican restaurant in a second story loft-type space with exposed brick, tall wood ceilings, + just an all around really hip atmosphere. They make their corn tortillas in house each day … they are hand-mashed + all! Even the tortilla chips are made with the homemade tortillas! The menu is based around their small, corn tortilla tacos + you can order as many different ones as you like! SO fresh + flavorful — I highly, highly recommend it!!

3. Husk

By far the fanciest + most sophisticated meal we had while in Charleston! The menu changes daily, as the chef bases each dish on what is available to him that morning; for example, he works with a couple of local fisherman + they will call him after their morning out on the water to tell him what type of fish they caught … and then some of the entrees are based around that! Everything else is determined by what can be bought fresh at the market that morning. Unreal flavors, really unique pairings, + a bit of a swanky atmosphere. If you want to eat here, you must make a reservation!

4. Xiao Bao Biscuit

Definitely the COOLEST restaurant we ate at during or stay. Located in a renovated old GAS STATION, guests can either eat outside (where the pumps used to be!), or inside that features lots of natural light + a really cool bar. This was, hands down, Caleb’s favorite meal. An Asian restaurant with dishes that are exploding with flavor! We had heard about this place from several people before going to Charleston + would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Asian flavors! Super unique but SO tasty!!

The group!

Charleston’s famous Rainbow Row!!

One of the speakers for the retreat we were at was a local photographer from Wisconsin, Shaunae Teske Photography!

Then there was a magician — he was my FAVORITE speaker by far! His magic was super crazy-cool, but he also had a really incredible message about loving on others + making them feel really special : )

We got to see these two amazing humans who we love so much, Amy & Jordan!!

Bloopers …

What is looks like when a bunch of photographers are roaming the streets of Charleston together …
