Future Self | One Question for Powerful Life Change.

September 22, 2020

Do you ever struggle to make the decision you actually want to make? Let me give you some examples:

  • You hit snooze when you want actually want to get up right away
  • You skip your workout when you actually want to move your body
  • You avoid calling a family member or friend when you actually do want to connect with them
  • You have the second helping when you were actually satisfied with just one

I often find myself in these situations. And I often find myself wishing I had made a different decision! It can be a grueling cycle. A few years ago, however, I heard an idea that (as dramatic as it sounds!) has truly been life-changing for me. I’m pretty sure this came from my friend Amy Kiefer, but I can’t be certain. Either way, the teacher shared that they constantly ask themselves, “What would my future self want?” or “How will my future self feel about this decision?” throughout the day. Sure enough, asking myself this same question has produced some serious life change. GOOD life change! Let me give you an example:

At times, something I find challenging about being an entrepreneur is that you have to self-motivate. For me, I am working from home and there is no one here to tell me what I need to get done for the day … besides myself. This past Monday morning, I woke up with ZERO motivation. It was gloomy, I felt tired, and to be honest, I’m definitely struggling with some blues around COVID. All I wanted to do was crawl back in bed – after all, who was stopping me? But, I also knew we had had a slow weekend where we were intentional about rest and connecting with one another and a few friends, so going back to bed was not what I *needed.

*I need to share a very important disclaimer here because my experience is that we live in a society that tells us productivity = work. This is one my greatest personal battles. It is NOT what I am communicating in this post. Far from it. If your mind or body need rest, it is critical to listen. I actually believe that slowing down and truly resting would help a lot of the problems many of us face including chronic pain, depression, burnout, marital hardships, illness, etc.*

Since I knew I was filled-up and well-rested from the weekend, and had a list of things I needed to get done for the day, I asked myself my power question: “What will your future self want?” I then imagined the end of the day Monday. I envisioned myself getting my tasks done … knowing they were done and the feeling that produced … and ending the night reading for leisure in bed. It is so simple but powerful, just the motivation I needed to GET STARTED! I had a really productive day on Monday and am so happy that I chose to do the work. I was even able to end the day with some restful reading!

I apply this same question to all the examples I listed in the beginning of this post ; ) When I don’t want to workout, for example, I ask myself what my future self would want and envision how I will feel in just one hour when the workout is done. I have never regretted moving my body!

I hope this mindset tip is as powerful for you as it has been for me. You may or may not know this depending on how long you’ve been following, but I actually really hate writing. I used my power question to get this post done when I felt like avoiding it. Now that it’s complete and I get to share this potentially life-changing information with you, I am SO GLAD I followed through : ) Have a beautiful week!
