Should you do a maternity session? I talk with a lot of parents who debate this question! Pregnancy is certainly a very special — and unique! — season of life, so I can understand why a lot of people go back and forth on whether or not to document it. Of course I am biased, but I don’t think you will ever regret the decision to do so. If you are on the fence, I hope this post brings clarity one way or another.
My number one tip for maternity sessions is to book a mini session! Mini sessions are a quick and easy way to preserve this season of life, with plenty of time to get a few photos of the whole family, as well as some individual portraits of mama. To me, mini sessions are a very approachable way to incorporate a maternity session into documenting your pregnancy journey!
Secondly, I recommend trying to schedule your maternity session sometime between 30-36 weeks. This generally seems to be the time when the bump has “popped” and is more noticeable in photos, but before mama is potentially getting too uncomfortable in the very final weeks of her pregnancy.
Lastly, I think it is really important to think about our babies when booking a maternity session! It can be really easy to think about why we want to book a session for our family, but I encourage parents to take it a step further and think about why they’d want to do it for their kids, too! The seasons of our family’s story that we choose to preserve will one day be treasured by the children that are in them. I imagine my own kids looking at photos of Caleb and I in the final weeks before we met them for the first time; I hope they see our excitement, our nervousness, our love.
May these kinds of photos be an obvious, tangible reminder to our children of how deeply, deeply loved they have been from the very start.
