The word that immediately comes to mind when I think about the W Family is “joy!” — followed closely behind it, “fun!” : ) I thoroughly enjoyed my morning with this lively crew as they danced, sang, snacked (there’s always snacks involved), and played games. Needless to say, these five adore one other AND love spending time together.
As I’m prepping for a Lifestyle Session with my clients, I encourage them to think of 2-3 things that their family enjoys doing together; the most important question I ask being, “What do you want to remember about this season of life?” For the W Family, it was music and games. For others, it might be reading books, baking cookies, imaginative play, or basketball in the driveway. Reflecting on this question not only allows parents to pause and notice the things they love in their current season of life (an important practice!), but also gives us activity ideas to engage in during the session that produce images with authentic emotion and connection.
Contrary to typical family sessions, lifestyle sessions are meant to capture the candid, the ordinary, and the sacred moments of family life at home. As I show up to each session with a documentary-style approach, I am able to fade into the background and capture a family just as they are, in their safest space, simply doing life (and what they love!), together.
At least for me personally, these are certainly the things I want to remember most about my life with little ones. Because I know the memories will inevitably fade as time goes on and my kids do get older. As both a mom and a photographer, nothing matters more to me — and that is why I created Signature Lifestyle Sessions.
